What Happens at CLASSICAL during the Summer?

For most parents and supporters of Cincinnati Classical Academy, the summer months can seem like a mystery. You might picture teachers embarking on six-week camping trips, the headmaster relaxing by a pool with a cold lemonade, or the leadership team leisurely reading Dante and Homer. While we hope some of that is true for their well-being and mine, the reality is quite different and much busier!

The life of a CLASSICAL teacher in the summer is a blend of rest and intense preparation. During the first half of the summer, our teachers are engaged in professional development, such as attending the Hillsdale College summer conference. These sessions are crucial as they focus on refining their craft, honing tried-and-true teaching strategies, and integrating classical education principles more deeply into their lessons.

Moreover, preparing for the next school year is a significant task. Teachers spend considerable time revising and creating lesson plans for the entire academic year, which spans 165 days of school. This preparation is not just about updating the previous year’s plans but also about incorporating new insights and techniques gained through professional development. Our teachers work diligently during the summer to ensure that they are ready to provide the best education to our students while also enjoying some well-deserved relaxation.

For our school leadership team, the summer is an incredibly busy period, especially as we continue to expand rapidly. This summer, we are excited to welcome 26 new employees, both faculty and staff. Preparing for their arrival involves organizing five orientation sessions on campus for both new and returning teachers. These sessions are essential for fostering a cohesive and well-prepared team ready to tackle the upcoming school year.

Another major focus during the summer is on facilities and campus improvements. This year, we are in the midst of relocating our middle school to the new (but temporary) Vine Street campus. This move involves significant logistical planning and execution to ensure a smooth transition.

At our Siebenthaler campus, which will now serve as our permanent home for grades K-4, we are undertaking several renovation projects. By August, parents and students will notice marked improvements, particularly at our entrances and in the Sojourner Truth Auditorium. These enhancements are part of our ongoing efforts to provide a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment for our students.

These are indeed exciting times at Cincinnati Classical Academy. Our growth and expansion, both in terms of physical infrastructure and personnel, are a testament to our commitment to providing an exceptional classical education. As we prepare for the new school year, we remain dedicated to our mission and to the success and well-being of our students.
